NLC funds assist learners to read with comprehension

The NLC funded books and stationery for children in Ripple Reading’s intervention enabling them to read with comprehension

Passionately focussed on the plight of Foundation Phase learners in the impoverished areas where the school system doesn’t adequately cater for their reading and comprehension needs, Ripple Reading CFO – Ashley Ngonyama, proudly acknowledges the receipt of R128 000 from the National Lottery Commission (NLC). These funds have been allocated to assist learners in Foundation Phase (Grades 1-3) to read with comprehension.

By tracking all the financial transactions and keeping a firm hand on expenditure, Ashley has ensured that the NLC funding has met all of the required parameters.

The bulk of the monies has been allocated towards the purchase and distribution of stationery as well as the supply of storybooks. These books have specially adapted for the Ripple Reading curriculum as designed by educational psychologist, Inge Nieuwoudt.

In the Ripple Reading classroom, dedicated teachers treat each of the children as individuals enabling them to reach their fullest potential. This, however, can only be achieved if the child is able to read with comprehension AND this is where Ripple Reading leads the field! Continuous assessments, under Inge’s guidance, evaluate the child’s improvement with respect to literacy.

With Ashley at the financial helm and recently appointed as Treasurer on the Ripple Reading Board, this NPO’s vision to ensure that EVERY South African child “can read on a grade level with understanding”, is certain.
